Sue has worked with individuals who have experienced psychological trauma for over 30 years as a clinician, trainer and supervisor.
Sue has an extensive background in the domestic abuse sector, as well as lived experience of coercive control. Initially working as an Occupational Therapist specialising in mental health, she developed psycho-educational programmes that promote trauma-informed practice and a recovery model. Sue is passionate about the need for multi-agency working and is committed to supporting frontline professionals to develop the skills required to work with a trauma-informed approach.
After many years in this sector, Sue is widely regarded as an expert and is frequently invited to speak at conferences. Her specialist topics include the impact of trauma on those who have experienced domestic abuse and multiple disadvantage. Her first programme, The Domestic Abuse Recovery Toolkit, is now 21 years old and continues to be recognised as one of the most effective trauma-informed programmes in the UK.
She has since written several other programmes, including those designed for women who have experienced sexual violence and those who have experienced developmental trauma in childhood.
