The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimated that in the year ending March 2024, 2.38m people aged 16+ experienced domestic abuse.

Based on a recovery model Sue Penna has developed since 2005, our CPD accredited courses use a Trauma-Informed Approach to help practitioners work with clients on a range of issues including:

  • Understanding the dynamics of abuse and abusive relationships
  • Post abuse recovery from the impact of coercion and control on adults and children
  • Assessment of coercive control and risk

Six of one and half a dozen of the other? Assessing victim/perpetrator dynamics in Intimate Partner Relationships.

This one day training session offers delegates the opportunity to gain an understanding of how to assess cases of intimate partner violence where both parties report being a victim of abuse. It aims to increase awareness of the impact on the family when victims and perpetrators are incorrectly identified.

 

The training will cover different types of domestic abuse and perpetrator typologies and the presenting behaviours of victims and perpetrators. On completion of the training, delegates should have an increased confidence in assessing cases where there are counter allegations.

 

Aims of the training:

  • An introduction to the theoretical perspectives on violence in interpersonal relationships.
  • To gain an understanding of how perpetrators use coercive control to shift blame.
  • To provide an overview of the research on perpetrator typologies.
  • To help delegates in understanding counter allegations and the DARVO model.
  • An introduction to assessing victim/perpetrator dynamics and behaviours.

Domestic Abuse And Suicide

This day’s training session offers delegates the opportunity to gain an understanding of how to assess cases of domestic abuse where suicidal ideation is present. By the end of the training participants will have the knowledge and skills to assess risk and appropriate support for these individuals.

 

Aims of the training: 

  • Identifying the prevalence of suicidal behaviour within the context of DA for both victims and suspected perpetrators.
  • Explain the effect of Controlling or Coercive Behaviour (CCB) on victims of DA including the long-term impact on quality of life and safety.
  • Describe theories of suicidality that explain how CCB causes a victim of DA to consider or attempt suicide.
  • Identify and explore the specific questions that individuals need to be asking a victim.
  • Identifying risk factors where DA and suicidal ideation are present 
  • An insight into prevention models where DA and suicidal ideation are present 
  • Explain the importance of accurate recording and risk assessment whenever CCB is disclosed.

 

This training is suitable for:
