Testimonial for the Rock Pool Domestic Abuse Children and Young People Recovery Toolkit

By Laura Argent – March 2016

Laura was asked for feedback on her experience of facilitating the Domestic Abuse Children and Young People Recovery Toolkit. This is what she said…

“I am happy to tell you how my experience of delivering the Children and Young People Recovery Toolkit went as I was quite honestly blown away by the response from the children.

On the first day the children arrived very anxious and all sat quietly afraid to speak.Β

The way the lessons were planned with so many activities, we were quickly able to get the children involved and participating.

From the first session the children absolutely blossomed, they opened up and talked about their thoughts and feelings and it was clear to see how much they enjoyed finding their voices.

I think the material covered is very important and they clearly learnt a lot of useful skills and tools to keep them safe and deal with their experiences.

The fun activities helped them learn these tools in a fun and interactive way that kept them constantly engaged and enthusiastic to attend the course each week.

They not only developed as individuals but the empathy and respect they showed to each other was beautiful and again I believe a big part of this was because of the way the course is laid out with the ground rules and then opportunities to do individual activities as well as group tasks.

Every child in the group showed a huge improvement in their levels of confidence from the first session to the last and their comfort in being able to express their feelings and opinions had also clearly developed hugely.

They laughed a lot and had fun but also tackled topics that a lot of people would find uncomfortable to discuss.

I am very passionate about this course as I have seen first-hand the huge impact it has made on the children and the benefits they have experienced from participating in it.

I believe the children being able to do this course as a group played such an integral role in helping deliver these tools to help them deal with their experiences.

By doing the group activities the pressure was off of them as individuals ask for by doing something they enjoyed they willingly interacted and engaged.

Also by being part of a group you could really see how this positively impacted the children by realising they are not alone.

I believe this is also why it helped them open up and discuss any issues they have experienced as they didn’t feel they were being judged as they knew they had all experienced similar issues in their lives.

I feel it not only helped them deal with their experiences of domestic abuse but given them invaluable tools and analogies to cope with many different situations they may face in the future.

The feedback we received from the children was overwhelming, they made us cards and posters and begged us to come back and do another course.

I am Child Support Worker working in a women’s refuge and have worked alongside many professionals supporting children who have experienced domestic abuse and this course is by far the most effective support I have found available for children who have experienced domestic violence.

I also believe that it can be easily delivered to suit all different age groups in the age range specified.

I genuinely hope that more people become trained in delivering this course and that it is rolled out to more and more schools as I cannot praise this course enough.

It has huge benefits for children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse and gives them the opportunity to learn and develop themselves in a safe and fun environment to go to thrive in the future.”
